The Consortium for Research in Elastic Wave Exploration Seismology

1996 Sponsors Meeting Highlights

By most reports, this year's sponsors meeting was a great success! We had 69 sponsors attend, representing our 33 sponsoring companies, from Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Norway, Japan and Venezuela. Attendees enjoyed (we hope!) two days of talks, poster sessions and informal discussions, as well as the stunning surroundings of the Kananaskis Valley.

Thanks to all attendees who took the time to fill out our questionnaire, resulting in many interesting comments and suggestions. This feedback helps us to determine the future direction of our research, and provides us with a direct critique of our work. Most of the comments were positive and supportive of our work and direction. Some of the dominant themes included:

We would like to thank everyone who attended for their interest and participation, and we'll plan to see you all again next year!

1996 SEG Meeting Highlights

Less than a week after the sponsors meeting, the CREWES Project headed south to the SEG meeting in Denver. CREWES presented nine talks and had a booth in the Consortium area. The Blackfoot 3C-3D survey generated a great deal of interest at our booth. Overall, we were very pleased with the high visibility of three-component seismic technology at the meeting, in the technical sessions, the workshop, and on the exhibit floor. Also impressive were the increasing number of commercial applications of converted-wave seismology.

New Software Donation

CREWES recently received a software donation from Hampson-Russell Software Ltd. Their GEOSTAT package uses the techniques of geostatistics to analyse seismic and well log data. This package was already used in work presented in the 1996 Research Report (chapter 44). We have also received the STRATA and AVO packages from Hampson-Russell. These software donations are of tremendous value to CREWES, and we would like to thank all companies that have donated software for their support.

Robert J. Ferguson has just been awarded the R. M. Hardy Graduate Scholarship from the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta. Rob is just finishing his Master's degree entitled P-S Seismic Inversion: Modeling, Processing and Field Cases. He will be starting his doctoral studies with CREWES in January. Congratulations, Rob!

News from Indonesia

Dr. Rob Stewart just returned to Calgary after teaching a course in Indonesia from November 18-22. The course, entitled Integrated seismic interpretation: Logs, synthetics, VSP and seismic, was for the Indonesian Geophysical Society and a group of companies operating in Indonesia.

Further Note

The University of Calgary and the Colorado School of Mines have cordially settled all difficulties with respect to the Joffre field data set.
